I just returned from my journey with “the guys” to a place I have gigged several times in the past. The Place? A little venue that can hold maybe 100 people tops… no food…. no drink… just music! The guys? That would be some of my favorite musicians who I actually get to call my friends. One of them, Adam Smith… When I first heard him sing I think my jaw hit the floor. And since then, he and I have become great friends and I feel quite blessed!
The other would be a Duo called Redland (get it?… Sedona has red rocks and it is … well… land?!) These guys will blow your mind as they do mine… They sing and perform as though they have been playing their whole lives together… seemless… like twins who share the same voice. Amazing songwriters and lyricists.
We played at a little place called “Why Sound” in Logan, Ut. Where getting a simple small drink big is a BIG BIG DEAL! haha! Not at Why Sound… just Utah in general. Geeez! Anyway… Utah is an incredibly beautiful state and there are some really great people! However, we had a few unpleasant run-ins! I was excited to facilitate finding a free place to stay via couchsurfing.com and when we arrived at the house we discovered that the man who accepted our couch request didn’t even run it by his wife or family! How did we know that?… well by the blatantly COLD reception we got from his family upon arrival… I wont go into much detail… but it was enough to make us scoot down the road to the local super 8 just minutes after arriving! We spent the next day running about and passing out flyers for our show at the local University (Utah State) and got busted by one of the teachers walking down the hall… Ha!
Sorry Ms. McGillicutty!
After that we ate at the mediocre Indian restaurant where the service seriously fell short of… oh, what do you call that?… oh yeah, service! With full bellys nonetheless we returned to the room to practice some more of each other’s songs as we wanted to back each other up with bass, percussion, harmonies, mandolin and piano. The show was the very first to stream through my new web site and we had upwards of 20 people tune in! We were supposed to follow the local favorite “September Say Good bye” but seeing as they got in at the start time they were nice enough to let us go first!
The show went great and we were really happy to make all of $42 as it is not about the money! I’m serious we had a great Feakin’ time and I would do it all over again! The drive may have been 11 hours one way but we shared some highly engaging conversation, beautiful views along the way and have made one step closer to a full on tour… I’ll tell you this… I know I can hang we these guys for extended periods of time now! That’s pretty exceptional!
